What's the project?

The 66 Dogs Project is an ongoing series of hand-painted portraits of dogs currently available for adoption across the United States. You can get updates by liking the 66 Dogs Project Facebook page.

If you don't mind getting a little teary, a fan in Baltimore created this awesome video to tell the story of one of the dogs I've featured.

How does the process work?

First, I identify a dog that would benefit from a little extra publicity. Maybe she’s a cuddlebug with a heart of gold who happens to be the “wrong” breed; maybe he’s a loyal companion who’s been overlooked because he’s deaf.

Once I have a dog in mind, I paint a watercolor portrait using a photograph as a reference, then digitally add information about the dog's personality, name, and contact information. When everything is polished and proofed, the final portrait is ready to be shared!

As a final thank-you to the future pet parents, I offer the original watercolor of the dog to the adoptive family for free.

Why are you doing this?

The Humane Society estimates that three to four million dogs and cats in shelters are euthanized every year. That’s about nine thousand every day; four hundred every hour; six every minute. Every ten seconds, another potentially adoptable pet is killed.

The 66 Dogs Project is my way of trying to help before it's too late.

I include details about the dogs right there in the paintings because I know that bringing a new dog into your home is a big decision. It's great if people fall in love with a dog because of how she looks; but I also want potential adopters to have a sense of each dog’s personality. For more specific questions about the dog’s temperament and compatibility with other pets and people, please contact the shelter or foster family directly.

Who's running this show, anyway?

That would be me. (Hi!)

Can you paint a portrait of my dog/cat/iguana/lemur?

Maybe! The Connect page on my personal website is a good place to start.

Alternatively, you can learn how to create your OWN pet portrait in my self-paced, online video class on Skillshare. It's a super relaxed crew over there--beginners welcome. Come on in, the water's warm!
